Keywork by One of the Industry's Best Experts

Although keys and keyframe are technically part of the action, their restoration or replacement employs specialized tools, machinery, jigs, fixtures, clamps, and skills for correct results. On older pianos, from uprights to concert grands, we are used to seeing beautiful ivory keytops. What goes into producing such work requires industrial tooling and specifications. Any non-professional can glance at a set of keys and spot unsquareness, irregular shaping, poor surface qualities, and color/grain issues. The bar is high for a proper job.

Mike Morvan has gradually but steadily built his key business toward these exacting standards. He sought and received help, tooling, and encouragement from the ivory application master Frank Stopa. He has properly researched and located supplies of best materials, glues, and techniques. David Warther from Ohio has provided Mike with best quality legal ivory, as well as generous referrals, advice, and support. The Piano Rebuilders reinforce Mike's efforts toward highest standards by "in-house" installations of his key work in all rebuilds.

The keys are the pianist's connection with the voice of the piano. How the keytops look, feel, and respond aid or obstruct the making of music. Psychologically, if the keytops are beautiful and inviting to the touch, they engender a favorable impression of the rest of the instrument. Mike understands this and places great importance on the contribution of each detail.

All key and keyframe services are offered. A range of coverings including high quality plastic, mineral plastic, ivory, bone, wooly mammoth, and ebony are available. All manner of repairs from balance hole and broken mortise solutions or building up previously over-sanded key sides to complete keyboard replacement. Finally, Mike takes on all challenges and brings the same good attitude, skills, and standards to every keyboard that comes his way. He does insist on quality materials, whether plastic or natural, and he does insist on doing the proper job. This may mean his services are not the cheapest available, but it does mean he makes every effort to have them turn out to be the best.
